2027 astronomy calendar: eclipses and meteor showers

The main solar event visible from France in 2027 will be the partial eclipse of 2 August. Totality will pass through southern Spain and North Africa. This selection distinguishes worldwide events from what can actually be seen locally.

Dates to remember

3–4 January : Quadrantids

A meteor shower whose 2027 maximum is favourable for European observers, according to the International Meteor Organization.

6 February : Annular solar eclipse

The annular path crosses parts of South America and the Atlantic; this is not a direct solar observing opportunity from mainland France.

20–21 February : Penumbral lunar eclipse

A subtle dimming of the Moon, not a total lunar eclipse.

21–22 April : Lyrids

Meteor activity best viewed with the naked eye under a dark sky; bright moonlight may be disruptive.

5–6 May : Eta Aquariids

Generally more favourable from southern latitudes; no telescope required.

30–31 July : Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids

Two late-July showers with activity across several nights.

2 August : Total and partial solar eclipse

Total along a narrow path through southern Spain, North Africa and beyond; partial from France. Exact circumstances depend on your city.

12–13 August : Perseids

A famous shower, although bright moonlight is expected to reduce visibility of faint meteors in 2027.

16–17 August : Penumbral lunar eclipse

A faint lunar event, with visibility varying by location.

21–22 October : Orionids

An autumn shower best enjoyed in dark skies.

13–14 December : Geminids

An often rewarding meteor shower; weather and moonlight remain important.

Prepare to observe

Meteor showers

Find a dark location, get comfortable and let your eyes adapt: telescopes restrict the field of view.

The Moon and planets

A guided telescope session can reveal lunar craters and planets when weather and geometry permit.

The Sun

Never look directly at the Sun without suitable and intact solar protection; a telescope needs its own appropriate front-mounted filter.

Dates refer to predicted peaks or periods, not guaranteed local visibility. Dates for France’s 2027 Nuits des étoiles events are not announced here without an official programme.
